Something for Nothing

I bought my first Rush album in eighth grade. In memory, I go back to those days with albums, Pouring over the lyrics, sitting alone and just going into the music. Still my favorite all time band! I love this so much. It Resonates now, just as it did then. Thank you so much for posting!
always such a Rush fanatic.

Background and Commentary

2112 closes with perhaps the clearest and most concise statement of purpose the band ever recorded. ‘Something for Nothing’ sounds like a call to action: ‘You don’t get something for nothing / You don’t get freedom for free / You won’t get wise with the sleep still in your eyes / No matter what your dream might be.'”—Bill Banasiewicz, Rush Visions

“The point of the whole song, though expressed in different ways, is you must be inner-directed if you are ever to follow your dreams to fruition. That doesn’t mean automatic rebellion against self-proclaimed authorities. If you felt you had to do the opposite of whatever they say to you, your action would still be controlled, albeit in a perverse way, by their commands. . . . This point is made strikingly by the clear allusion to the closing doxology of the Lord’s Prayer (‘For thine…

Passion for Punches and Pounds

Why am I doing it?

When I explain my new-found passion of fighting and weight-lifting, I typically get the same few types of responses. I love talking to people about it. Sometimes, I find people who share the same interest or used to weight lift and train. However, the answer that pains me the most usually comes accompanied with a scrunched-up, confused face.

“Why are you doing that? Aren’t you worried about messing up your face? What do your parents think? What if you get hurt? Aren’t you worried you’ll look like a man?”

I can usually see it coming as soon as I say the word “fight.” I think a part of it may be bred from the fact that I am a girl. I am supposed to be a lady. You would think that this new era would have rid the shackles of the “proper lass.” I am…

“No society wants you to become wise: it is against the investment of all societies. If people are wise they cannot be exploited. If they are intelligent they cannot be subjugated, they cannot be forced in a mechanical life, to live like robots. They will assert their individuality. They will have the fragrance of rebellion around them. They will like to live in freedom. Freedom comes with wisdom, intrinsically. They are inseparable, and no society wants people to be free. The communist society, the fascist society, the capitalist society, the Hindu, the Mohammedan, the Christian — no society — would like people to use their own intelligence because the moment they start using their intelligence they become dangerous — dangerous to the establishment, dangerous to the people who are in power, dangerous to the ‘haves’; dangerous to all kinds of oppression, exploitation, suppression; dangerous to the churches, dangerous to the states, dangerous to the nations. In fact, a wise man is afire, alive, aflame. But he cannot sell his life, he cannot serve them. He would like rather to die than to be enslaved.” ~Osho

Solarpunk

Sockrotation

Solarpunk is a wonderful new genre conceived by Olivia Louise.

Art by Owen CarsonOkay, so I’m pretty sure that by now everyone at least is aware of Steampunk, with it’s completely awesome Victorian sci-fi aesthetic. But what I want to see is Solarpunk – a plausible near-future sci-fi genre, which I like to imagine as based on updated Art Nouveau, Victorian, and Edwardian aesthetics, combined with a green and renewable energy movement to create a world in which children grow up being taught about building electronic tech as well as food gardening and other skills, and people have come back around to appreciating artisans and craftspeople, from stonemasons and smithies, to dress makers and jewelers, and everyone in between. A balance of sustainable energy-powered tech, environmental cities, and wicked cool aesthetics.
